What to Wear?

If you’re planning your first brand photoshoot you might be wondering what you should wear for your personal branding photos or business headshots. For a lot of people, choosing the outfits for brand photos is the hardest part of preparing for the photoshoot!

5 TIPS ON HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST OUTFITS

1. WEAR WHAT LOOKS LIKE YOU My most important tip: wear what you’re comfortable in and LOVE wearing! Don’t buy a new outfit the night before your shoot and expect to feel amazing in it. Wear your outfit options around, take iPhone photos, and test them out!

2. WEAR CLOTHES THAT FIT WELL Ill-fitting clothing can ruin your professional image. Choose outfits that are properly fitted and complement your figure and avoid wearing anything very loose and slouchy or skin-tight.

3.DON’T FORGET TO ACCESSORIZE Jewelry can elevate an outfit to the next level, making you look more stylish and polished than your everyday look. But remember, less is more. This is also a great place to showcase your personality. If you love animal print, try adding some leopard print shoes to your outfit. This can be fun and showcase your style without distracting from you. Hats, scarves, necklaces, jackets… These little beauties are an essential part of a successful branding photo session. While you typically don’t have time for lots of wardrobe changes, a quick swap of your accessories can make all the difference. A scarf and hat can give jeans and a blouse, a completely new look. Swapping ear rings and a necklace can completely change the vibe of your outfit.

4. WEAR YOUR BRAND COLORS The purpose of your branding photos is to use them on your website, and other platforms so keep your brand colors in mind when choosing your outfits. Don’t wear colors that are off-brand. You can either wear your colors boldly or incorporate them subtly, e.g. scarf, pair of shoes.

5.BRING A VARIETY OF OUTFITS Along with great headshots you want to use this time to build some content images, so bring a few different looks, I always suggest, a casual jean outfit, a dressy outfit, and something fun.

5 TIPS ON WHAT NOT TO WEAR

1. DON’T WEAR ANYTHING TOO TIGHT OR DRESSES THAT MAKES YOU FEEL UNCOMFORTABLE.

Anything too tight, finicky or irritating to the skin will leave you continually tugging and adjusting the garment, which would result in you not just feeling but looking uncomfortable in the photos.

2. DON’T WEAR SOMETHING YOU WOULDN’T NORMALLY WEAR OTHERWISE.

Ok, this is a bit of controversial advice as I always recommend my clients to wear something that is not their everyday outfit. For example, if you work from home and usually wear jeans and tops and lead an online course in that, it is absolutely fine to have photos of you in these comfortable clothes. The goal of a personal branding photoshoot is to showcase you and your wonderful personality! However, there will be situations when you need to be able to provide photos of you dressing up a little more, remember these images will be seen by potential clients and you want to think about the first impression you want to leave them with.

3. DON’T WEAR CLOTHING THAT IS WORN OUT? OLD OR WRINKLED.

You want to look polished and professional in your personal branding images. Stretched out tops or sweaters with pilling don’t photograph well and unfortunately, they convey a less-than-professional message.

If you’ve already looked through your closet and still can’t find anything that fits the bill, then look on the bright side; at least it’s a great excuse to go shopping!

4. DON’T WEAR NEON COLORS OR BUSY PRINTS.

Even if neon colors or prints represent your brand, it’s better to incorporate them subtly through your jewelry, a scarf, or props like office supplies, and keep the other visual elements of the shoot simple. Otherwise, they’re bound to overpower the image, causing viewers to be more focused on your wardrobe than on you.

5. DON’T FORGET YOUR PROPS!

Adding a few props is a great way to build extra content. Your laptop, coffee mug, wine glass, cell phone, your address book are all examples of props that you may want to include. if you aren't sure what props to include ask me and I will give you some suggestions
